An acting police sergeant is being treated for a gunshot wound to his left hand after he allegedly shot himself.
The incident is said to have taken place around 2pm at his home in Penal. Cross Body Gun Holster
The officer, who is attached to Homicide Region III, told investigators that he had reached for his licensed Glock 19 pistol which was in a holster that was on a stand next to his bed.
However, the holster with the weapon fell.
The officer said he instinctively reached out to catch it but his fingers touched the trigger and the weapon discharged.
The bullet pierced his left palm.
The officer then raised an alarm and was taken to the Siparia Health Facility for treatment.
He was stabilised and then transferred to the San Fernando General Hospital.
His condition is said to be sable.
Crime scene investigators were notified and the licensed weapon was seized.
